The Pe’a or Sogaimiti marks a Samoan man’s passage into leadership. The tatau/tattoo begins from the lower back and extends to the entirety of the lower body even to below the knees on men. The Process is painful and significant as every Pe’a is unique to the bearer in design and meaning.
In this portrait, the tattooing ritual has just finished (with aiga/family in support who have set beside the bearer offering encouragement) . Having endured the ritualistic process, the man now stands anew, welcoming his expanded role in the family and community.
